A look at robotic fertility surgery
Our Austin fertility surgeons always opt to treat patients with the least invasive and most effective fertility treatments, but surgery is sometimes necessary. To minimize discomfort and recovery time, our surgeons are trained in robotic fertility surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System. This method is an excellent option for many women who are seeking surgical treatment for certain conditions, including fibroids, endometriosis and adhesions.
What is robotic fertility surgery?
Robotic fertility surgery is a form of laparoscopy, which is a minimally invasive surgery that is usually performed on an outpatient basis. During this procedure, one of our Austin fertility surgeons will make a small incision (about a half inch in length) near the belly button. He or she will place a laparoscope, or a lighted camera, and surgical instruments in the incision.
With robotic fertility surgery, the surgeon uses robotic arms to hold the surgical instruments in place. Using a console several feet away, the surgeon will control the robotic arms and instruments to perform the surgery. Contrary to popular belief, it is the surgeon, not the robot, who is performing the surgery. The robotic arms are merely surgical tools.
What are the advantages of robotic fertility surgery?
Our Austin fertility surgeons find that robotic fertility surgery allows them to operate with greater precision and control, without having to make large incisions. Not only does this surgical technique have excellent clinical outcomes, it also minimizes the pain and risks associated with larger incisions and increases the speed of a patient’s recovery.
Who is a good candidate for robotic fertility surgery?
While robotic fertility surgery can help many women overcome barriers to reproduction, it is not right for everyone. Our Austin fertility specialists will review a patient’s medical history and diagnosis to determine if they are a good candidate for robotic surgery.
Every patient is different, but our surgeons may use robotic fertility surgery to treat fibroids, endometriosis and adhesions. They can also use it to perform tubal reconstruction procedures.
