It’s Hot Enough to Fry an Egg … or Sperm

What you should know about heat and sperm health in Texas

40317373_sThe temps in Austin this July will hover around the century mark. Texas Fertility Center cautions men to keep their cool, especially if they plan to conceive late this summer and into fall. The millions of sperm that a man is producing right now will mature and make an appearance in October/November. It takes approximately 90-108 days for sperm cells to fully mature.

Long-term exposure to high temperatures hinders the little guys, affecting sperm health and male fertility. The testicles provide a natural cooling system, dropping further from a man’s core to regulate temps. Everyone has heard the boxers versus briefs debate, but did you know that the issue is heat, not fit. Briefs hug everything in, preventing the testicles from dropping away from the body to cool down a degree or two.

The connection between heat and sperm health

At Texas Fertility Center, we are not overly concerned with your choice of underwear, but we do advise men to pay attention to heat and sperm health by taking some other precautions.

Avoid saunas and hot tubs. You might like to add this last step to your gym routine to relax and soothe sore muscles. Best not to make it a regular habit while you are trying to conceive.

Trade your long bike rides for shorter distances or other options. If your exercise routine also includes running outdoors, keep your cool at the Splash and Dash on July 21 at Quarry Lake at Pure Austin North. It includes a short distance run and fresh water swim.

Move your laptop off your lap. The heat emitted from laptop computers can affect sperm health over time. Grab an iced coffee and position your PC on a table or counter instead this summer.

Heat and sperm health are connected, yes. So are genetic factors, health habits, weight and anatomical problems. We find male factors in nearly one-half of all cases of infertility. If you plan to start a family, it’s important to be aware of men’s health tips and common causes of male infertility. Contact the experts at Texas Fertility Center if you have experienced trouble getting pregnant.
