The Link Between Seafood and Fertility

Is there a link between seafood and fertility?

Is there a link between seafood and fertility? When you’re trying to conceive, you may be overwhelmed by all of the information there is out there about boosting your fertility. You’ve likely heard suggestions about scheduling sex and even underwear recommendations for men. Now, a new study suggests that there may be a link between seafood and fertility. Does this mean that you should load your shopping cart and plate with fish?

In an interview with Glam, Erika Munch MD, a fertility specialist from our San Antonio location, explained what this study means for women and men who are trying to conceive. The team at our Austin fertility center explains more.

The interview about seafood and fertility

Harvard University and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) conducted a study about seafood and fertility. After following 500 couples in Michigan and Texas for one year, the researchers found that couples who ate more seafood had more frequent intercourse (22% more often).

This extra time in the bedroom seemed to increase their odds of conceiving. 92% of the couples who ate seafood more than twice a week conceived by the end of the study. Only 79% of the couples who ate seafood less frequently were expecting a baby after one year.

Dr. Munch explains that it makes sense that the couples who had sex more often were more likely to conceive. But she cautions her patients from assuming that seafood and increased fertility go hand in hand. After all, an association between two things doesn’t mean that one caused the other. “Sometimes, there are unmeasurable factors that can be the missing link between the two,” she explains.

How can you boost your odds of conceiving?

It seems that researchers will need to look closer at the link between eating seafood and fertility before we can be confident that a diet rich in fish boosts fertility.

In the meantime, our Austin fertility center has some recommendations for men and women who are trying to conceive.
