Fertility Testing for Lesbians

Fertility testing for lesbians could be the first step on your path to motherhood

At Texas Fertility Center, you can find a wide variety of family-building options for lesbian couples and single women. During your appointment with an Austin fertility doctor from our clinic, you’ll learn about everything from donor sperm IUI to reciprocal IVF. However, you’ll need fertility testing for lesbians before moving forward with any of these options.

When you have a fertility evaluation, you and your doctor learn more about health and fertility. Once you have this information, it becomes much easier to create your customized treatment plan.

You’ll start your fertility evaluation with a consultation

At your first appointment with an Austin fertility doctor at TFC, you’ll talk about your family-building goals. If you have a partner, this includes discussing which one of you will provide the eggs for the pregnancy and which one will carry the pregnancy. One of you can do both things, or you can both share in the magic of family building with reciprocal IVF.

During your consultation, your doctor will also take your family and medical history. This includes discussing your menstrual cycles and whether you’ve been pregnant before. Your doctor will also leave plenty of time for you to ask any questions.

The information that your doctor gathered from this first appointment is very important. It will help him or her determine which types of fertility testing for lesbians to recommend.

The next step is moving to fertility testing for lesbians

While each patient is different, there are some general tests that our Austin fertility doctors perform as a part of the fertility evaluation. These include a transvaginal ultrasound and fertility bloodwork.

  • The transvaginal ultrasound occurs in our clinic, and it allows your doctor to examine your uterus and ovaries. Specifically, he or she can check for uterine polyps or fibroids as well as ovarian cysts. He or she can also perform an antral follicle count.
  • Bloodwork tests levels of specific reproductive hormones. Some common examples include follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH). These hormones provide more information about ovarian reserve (egg supply).

It’s also common to have a test called a hysterosalpingogram (HSG). This test helps determine whether blockages are present in the fallopian tubes.

Once your doctor has all the results of your fertility evaluation, you will discuss them and develop your family-building plan.
