Texas Fertility Center offers oncofertility for breast cancer to preserve the dream of having a family in the future
The team at our Austin fertility clinic is committed to helping our patients overcome any obstacle on the path to parenthood. Often, this involves treatments like intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). In other cases, this involves providing egg and embryo freezing as part of oncofertility for breast cancer.
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re explaining what you need to know about fertility preservation for breast cancer, including how to get started with it.
What is oncofertility for breast cancer?
Today’s cancer treatments are very effective, helping many women and men live long, healthy lives. However, these life-saving treatments can cause fertility issues in both male and female patients. Thankfully, fertility preservation can keep the dream of parenthood alive.
- Egg freezing allows women to preserve their eggs to use during future pregnancy attempts. The woman will take fertility medications to stimulate the production of multiple eggs. She’ll then have an egg retrieval procedure at our Austin fertility clinic before an embryologist flash-freezes the eggs.
- Embryo freezing follows the first two steps of egg freezing. However, instead of freezing the eggs, the embryologist uses sperm to fertilize the eggs in the IVF laboratory. The final step is freezing the resulting embryos and placing them into long-term storage.
When a woman is ready to use her frozen eggs or embryos, an embryologist will thaw them. Then, the embryologist will fertilize the eggs to create embryos. Finally, a fertility doctor will transfer one of the resulting embryos to the uterus.
