Learn more about this condition during Fibroid Awareness Month

Uterine fibroids are a very common condition among women. These benign uterine growths can range in size from microscopic seedlings to bulky masses that can distort the size and shape of the uterus.

There are different types of fibroids. Intramural fibroids grow in the muscle of the uterine wall. In contrast, submucosal fibroids push into the uterus, while subserosal fibroids extend outside of the uterine cavity.

Many women don’t realize that they have uterine fibroids because the growths often don’t cause any symptoms. However, some women may experience the following issues due to fibroids.

  • Heavy or long periods
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Constipation
  • Back aches
  • Frequent urination or trouble emptying the bladder
  • Infertility in some cases

Our Austin fertility specialists can diagnose fibroids using a transvaginal ultrasound or hysteroscopy. After making a diagnosis, our team can develop a customized treatment plan.

We offer multiple options to treat uterine fibroids

If you have uterine fibroids that aren’t causing a problem, our Austin fertility specialists may only recommend ongoing monitoring of the growths. However, if you have symptoms, our team may recommend one or more of the following fertility-sparing treatments.

  • Medications like birth control pills can help with excessive menstrual bleeding. However, they don’t shrink the fibroids. To deal with pelvic pain, our team may suggest NSAIDs.
  • Myomectomy is a type of minimally invasive surgery that involves removing the fibroids while leaving the uterus in place. Our team can perform this procedure using laparoscopic, hysteroscopic or robotic surgery, depending on the size and location of the fibroids.

As we educate and empower patients during Fibroid Awareness Month, our goal is to help more women realize that they don’t have to suffer from these uterine growths. Contact us to schedule an appointment to learn how you can find relief.
