Male Infertility

Learn the basics of male infertility

Millions of couples face fertility struggles, and contrary to popular belief, it isn’t just a woman’s problem. Male infertility is a factor in approximately 40% of cases. The team at our Austin fertility center realizes that this may be surprising. We also know how devastating a diagnosis of male infertility can seem to hopeful parents. However, the reproductive endocrinologists at Texas Fertility Center can provide the advanced fertility treatments necessary to achieve a healthy pregnancy.

Diagnosing male infertility

Conceiving a child is your top priority, and our fertility specialists are committed to identifying any roadblocks that may stand in your way. The physicians at our Austin fertility center begin the process of diagnosing male infertility by taking a thorough medical history and exploring lifestyle factors that can influence fertility.

They then order a semen analysis to assess the volume, concentration (the number of sperm per volume of semen), motility (the percentage of sperm that are alive and swimming) and morphology (the percentage of sperm with a normal shape).

Depending on the results of testing, your physician may refer you to a local urologist. This type of doctor can diagnose and help treat many causes of male infertility, including anatomic factors such as an obstruction or varicocele, endocrine factors such as complications from diabetes, and functional factors such as erectile dysfunction.

Treating male infertility

Our Austin fertility center offers a number of proven treatments to overcome male infertility. These options range from intrauterine insemination (IUI) to in vitro fertilization (IVF) with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

While IUI simply involves using a catheter to insert washed and prepared sperm into your partner’s uterus, IVF with ICSI is more advanced. Taking a typical IVF cycle to the next level, our embryologists use ICSI to inject a single sperm into an egg to aid in fertilization. Your fertility specialist will discuss the results of testing and consider your goals to help you decide which treatment is right for you.

Our physicians know that male infertility can be distressing, so we offer resources to help you cope. If you need advice about how to best support your partner during fertility treatment, we can also provide this information. We believe that your emotional and psychological wellness is just as important as your physical health.

Contact us to schedule an appointment with our Austin fertility center to get the top-notch care you deserve from a compassionate team you can trust.
