Register for pre-pregnancy genetic testing to know if you carry inheritable disease
If you plan to start a family one day, the physicians at Texas Fertility Center encourage you to find answers and prepare for a healthy pregnancy, now or years from now. Doctors and genetic counselors are often asked: Who needs testing?
The answer is anyone who plans to get pregnant one day, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)*.
Our pre-pregnancy genetic testing event provides an opportunity to learn which inheritable diseases you may unknowingly carry, conditions such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, Tay-Sachs disease, fragile X and spinal muscular atrophy. Millions of Americans are symptomless carriers, meaning they have a defective gene but not the active form of the disease. If they have a partner with the same defective gene, their children have a 1 in 4 chance for having the active disease.
What can you do?
Register for the event, learn more about risks by ethnicity and country of origin, and give a blood or saliva sample. Samples are sent to a reference lab for testing that will reveal any gene mutations. This information gives you time to plan for a healthy pregnancy when the time comes.
