Egg freezing can ease the societal burden women feel to have children at a young age
Declining fertility rates affect a country’s ability to care for its elderly population and to continue to innovate and protect itself. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article by Jonathan V. Last, a fertility rate of 2.1 children per woman is necessary to maintain the standard population level. An average number above 2.1 indicates growth. Today’s fertility rate, the average number of children a woman bears over a lifetime, hovers at 1.93.
The article cites maternal age as one factor affecting the birth rate. According to Texas Fertility Center, a woman’s age has a strong impact on her ability to conceive. Female infertility rates increase as women wait too late to have children. This delay may be attributed to a woman’s desire to establish a career, or a decrease in societal pressure to have children as soon as possible. Maternal age is the number one factor affecting fertility in the U.S., with 1 out of 7 couples having fertility issues.
