Turning to IVF after IUI helped Jackie and Luke welcome a second child

When Jackie and Luke were ready to have their first child, they turned to Jackie’s OBGYN for IUI. This treatment helped them welcome their son, Owen. However, it didn’t have the same result when they wanted to try for another baby. Thankfully, turning to IVF after IUI did.
The couple shares how working with Dr. Anthony Propst at Texas Fertility Center (TFC) helped them become parents a second time.
The couple starts their family with help from IUI
Starting a family isn’t always straightforward. For Jackie and Luke, IUI was necessary to welcome their first baby. After two rounds of intrauterine insemination with Jackie’s OBGYN, the couple became parents to Owen.
Two years later, Jackie and Luke were ready to expand their family. They followed the same treatment plan but didn’t have any success after three rounds of IUI.
When the couple spontaneously got pregnant on their own, they were hopeful that they would soon have a second baby. Unfortunately, they suffered an early miscarriage.

After that, the couple tried four more rounds of IUI, again without success. According to Jackie, “That’s when our regular OB/GYN recommended more in-depth assessment and treatment with a fertility specialist.”
Jackie and Luke grow their family with IVF after IUI
The couple began their search for a fertility doctor. Jackie and Luke wanted a doctor they could trust, so they asked their friends. They learned two sets of friends conceived with help from our Austin fertility clinic.
Their friends’ positive experiences weren’t the only reason they picked TFC. “After so much difficulty with scheduling and massive delays with my regular OB, I really valued the convenience of multiple TFC locations and the timeliness of the clinic,” Jackie explains.

At the first appointment, the couple met Dr. Propst. He recommended starting fertility testing. The test results revealed that the couple was facing a low sperm count. That wasn’t all, though.
“We went through genetic testing and found out that I’m actually a carrier for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), which can be fatal for 50% of my male offspring,” Jackie says. “We couldn’t ensure that our embryos didn’t get my bad DMD gene, so we elected to transfer a female embryo since 50% of female offspring can be carriers but are asymptomatic.
After this first IVF embryo transfer, the couple got pregnant with their second child. Jackie describes the pregnancy as “generally uneventful” and the birth as “relatively enjoyable.” As for the moment when they finally met their daughter, Quinn, that was magical.
After Quinn was born, they brought her to meet Dr. Propst and the team. “They were all so excited for us, and it was so cool to have that full circle moment with the people who made it happen,” Jackie recalls.
These hopeful parents share their advice and wisdom
After successfully conceiving with IVF after IUI, Jackie and Luke learned a lot. Today, they are proud to share this wisdom with other hopeful parents.

“Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself, prioritize your mental health and trust your gut instincts. If a practice or provider doesn’t feel right or is causing you stress, it’s OK to switch,” Jackie advises.
Another piece of advice is to visit our Austin fertility center if you have trouble conceiving. According to Jackie, “Switching to TFC from our regular OBGYN was like a breath of fresh air and took so much stress out of the fertility journey.”
Jackie describes her experience with TFC as “incredible,” describing everyone they interacted with as “so friendly, on time, kind and very conscientious of the heightened emotions involved with fertility issues and the stress and confusion that can come with that.”
The exceptional care and “prompt, thorough and thoughtful” responses from TFC “made the whole process so much easier.” If you want to have your own fertility success story, we invite you to contact us and schedule an appointment.
