When to See a Fertility Specialist

Know when to see a fertility specialist

Know when to see a fertility specialistYou might think that it should be easy to conceive when you’re ready to grow your family, but sometimes nature needs a nudge. Although it can be tempting to keep trying on your own – even after seeing multiple negative pregnancy tests – it’s important to know when to see a fertility specialist so that you don’t waste precious time.

You don’t have to guess when the time is right. Our Austin fertility specialists have valuable information to let you know when you should seek help conceiving.

When to see a fertility specialist based on your age

You are most likely to conceive when you are in your 20s and early-30s. Once you reach your mid-30s, the quality and the quantity of your eggs begins to decline more rapidly. If you are 30 years old and have no fertility issues, you have a 20% of conceiving each month. In contrast, you have less than a 5% chance of conceiving each month when you are 40 years old.

To help you determine when to see a fertility specialist, our Austin fertility specialists recommend the following guidelines from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

  • Women younger than age 35. You should schedule an appointment with a fertility specialist if you have been unable to conceive after one year of trying.
  • Women age 35 or older. You should visit a fertility specialist if you have not become pregnant after trying for six months.

Other factors to consider

If you know that you have a condition that could impact your fertility, such as irregular periods, endometriosis, prior pelvic infections or surgeries or if your partner has erectile dysfunction or a known low sperm count, you should visit a fertility specialist as soon as you want to grow your family.

Diagnostic testing can determine how these issues impact your fertility and your physician can start you on the appropriate fertility treatments to help you bring home a bundle of joy. Our Austin fertility specialists have seen–and treated–it all, and would be honored to assist you on your path to parenthood.
