At Texas Fertility Center, we know it can be difficult to talk about pregnancy loss. It’s an emotional and deeply personal topic that many people navigate alone. However, the team at our Austin infertility center wants you to know that we are here to support you. Our hope is that you’ll see you aren’t alone and realize it is often possible to have a healthy baby.
Discovering hope and the truth with pregnancy loss facts
We notice that many patients feel alone in their struggles because miscarriage is not often discussed in our society. At our Austin infertility center, we feel it’s our duty to shed light on this painful, yet common, experience. By sharing pregnancy loss facts, we hope hopeful parents see that they are far from alone, and that parenthood is still possible.
- What is a miscarriage? A miscarriage is a pregnancy loss that occurs before 20 weeks. Most miscarriages happen in the first trimester of pregnancy.
- How common is miscarriage? About 10% to 20% of known pregnancies end in a loss. However, this number is likely higher because some miscarriages happen before the person realizes they’re expecting.
- How common are multiple miscarriages? When a patient has two or more miscarriages, we say they have had recurrent pregnancy loss. About 1% of reproductive-age women experience this.
- What causes a miscarriage? Different issues can cause a miscarriage, including chromosomal defects, anatomic issues, hormonal imbalances, infections and immune problems.
After hearing these pregnancy loss facts, patients often want to know if pregnancy is possible after a miscarriage. The answer is yes. A person has a 60% to 80% chance of having a full-term pregnancy even after three losses.
Talking about treatment during Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month
When someone experiences a miscarriage, they can often conceive and give birth to a healthy baby on their own. However, patients who have a recurrent pregnancy loss diagnosis might need a little extra help.
Our Austin infertility center can order a recurrent pregnancy loss evaluation to determine the cause of the miscarriage. Using this information, our team can work with the patient to develop a customized treatment plan that helps them realize their dream of parenthood.
During Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, we want you to have hope that parenthood is possible. Contact us to learn more pregnancy loss facts and get the support you need and deserve.
