Learn more about the different types of uterine abnormalities and how we treat them
Many different issues can cause female infertility. While most patients first think of problems with ovulation or egg supply, congenital uterine anomalies can also make pregnancy more difficult. You might be surprised to learn that up to 25% of mothers who have miscarried or delivered prematurely have a uterine malformation. However, this diagnosis doesn’t mean parenthood is impossible. Our Austin infertility doctors can diagnose and treat the various types of uterine abnormalities.
What are congenital uterine anomalies?
A congenital uterine anomaly means that a patient’s uterus developed differently when she was growing in her mother’s womb. Our Austin infertility doctors tell patients there are five types of uterine abnormalities in this category.
- Septate uterus is a uterus with tissue dividing the middle.
- Bicornuate uterus is a heart-shaped uterus with two cavities.
- Arcuate uterus is a uterus that has a dent that pushes into the top.
- Uterus didelphys is a double uterus.
- Unicornuate uterus is a one-sided uterus.
The septate uterus and the bicornuate uterus are the two most common congenital uterine anomalies. In terms of treatment, doctors often suggest surgery for a septate uterus. However, physicians don’t often recommend surgery to treat the other malformations. Instead, other fertility treatments and careful monitoring during pregnancy are typically best.
What are some other types of uterine abnormalities?
Congenital uterine anomalies aren’t the only types of uterine abnormalities. Other issues can include intrauterine adhesions, uterine fibroids and endometrial polyps.
- Intrauterine adhesions are bands of tissue in the uterus that are often due to an injury. This tissue can cause infertility and problems with the menstrual cycle. Using laparoscopic surgery, our specialists can remove adhesions.
- Uterine fibroids are almost always non-cancerous growths that can result in heavy periods with painful cramping, pelvic pain and infertility. Minimally invasive procedures can remove these growths and improve fertility.
- Endometrial polyps are overgrowths of the uterine lining. They can cause abnormal bleeding and fertility issues. The good news is that our Austin infertility doctors can surgically remove them.
Once patients receive treatment for the different types of uterine abnormalities, they can often go on to have healthy babies. If you would like to learn more about your family-building options, contact us for an appointment.
