Katie and Kyle never thought their future would include ERA for unexplained infertility

Like most couples, Katie and Kyle assumed they would be able to conceive when the time was right. However, they didn’t have any luck after a year of trying. Katie decided to visit her OB/GYN for some basic testing and her doctor recommended that she make an appointment with a fertility doctor. She had no idea this would be the start of a journey that would include conceiving using ERA for unexplained infertility.

When it came time to select an Austin fertility center, Katie decided to visit one she drove by every day. “I would always see Texas Fertility Center on my work commute when I drove on Mopac, so I made an appointment,” she explains. She scheduled with Thomas Vaughn MD and was ready to begin her journey.

Taking the first steps with Texas Fertility Center

Although she was nervous for her appointment, she was instantly put at ease by the team at our Austin fertility center. “The office was inviting and everyone there was so warm and friendly,” she recalls. “When I first met Dr. Vaughn, I was amazed by how kind and confident he was. We selected him for his experience, but he also has such a great bedside manner and answered all our questions.”

Dr. Vaughn recommended comprehensive testing to figure out why Katie and Kyle couldn’t conceive, but the tests didn’t reveal any answers. This is known as unexplained infertility and it happens to one in five couples who undergo comprehensive fertility testing.

However, it wasn’t the end of the road. Dr. Vaughn recommended that the couple try fertility treatments. “He didn’t give up hope, so neither did we,” Katie explains.

Finding fertility success with help from ERA for unexplained infertility

Although three intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles were not successful, the couple ultimately welcomed a baby using in vitro fertilization (IVF) and ERA for unexplained infertility. An ERA, or endometrial receptivity array, is a test that fertility doctors can use as part of IVF to determine when a woman’s uterine lining is ready for the embryo transfer.

After performing the test at our Austin fertility center, Dr. Vaughn knew the best time to perform Katie’s embryo transfer. The embryo that he transferred ended up developing into a healthy pregnancy. Nine months later, the couple gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Margaret. They also plan to do another embryo transfer soon. “Margaret is such a gift and we want to give her a sibling,” Katie says.

Advice for other hopeful parents facing unexplained infertility

A diagnosis of unexplained infertility might seem discouraging, but Katie and Kyle want other patients to know that there’s still hope. “You aren’t alone and there is hope. You just have to be persistent,” Katie says, “Having an ERA for unexplained infertility made all the difference and we have Margaret now. We’re so grateful to Dr. Vaughn and everyone at Texas Fertility Center.”
