Patient success stories illustrate how fertility surgery can protect or restore reproductive health
If you are dealing with infertility or periods that are painful and debilitating, the last two words you probably want to hear are fertility surgery. However, for many patients at our Austin fertility center, this life-changing surgery has been the key to protecting or restoring their fertility, as well as improving their quality of life.
Our board certified fertility doctors, all trained as skilled surgeons, will often recommend fertility surgery if an evaluation reveals:
- Large uterine fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Blocked fallopian tubes
- Pelvic adhesions (scar tissue)
- Uterine polyps
- Ovarian cysts
- Uterine malformations, such as a uterine septum
It may be comforting to know that minimally-invasive laparoscopic, hysteroscopic, and robotic fertility surgery provide our patients with faster recovery times, less scarring, and decreased surgical risk and postoperative pain. But perhaps even more reassuring is the successful outcome this surgery can provide, as experienced and shared below by three of our Austin fertility center patients.
Fertility surgery success story #1: Amanda
Diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis results in two pregnancies and normal periods
After trying to become pregnant for more than a year, Amanda is thankful for the “decisive direction” provided by Dr. Kaylen Silverberg, medical director at Texas Fertility Center. Laparoscopic surgery was the key to the diagnosis and treatment of Amanda’s Stage II endometriosis. Because the rate of recurrence within four years after surgery is 50%, Amanda and her husband began IVF treatment right away. She is now the mother of two and finally knows what a normal period feels like.
Fertility surgery success story #2: Tashara
Minimally-invasive surgery removes the fibroid but saves the uterus
At 32, Tashara was not ready to have children. However, when her gynecologist suggested she have a hysterectomy to remove a fibroid the size of an orange that was causing heavy periods and frequent urination, she sought a second opinion from Dr. Lisa Hansard at Texas Fertility Center. The solution? A mini-laparotomy myomectomy, a minimally-invasive surgical procedure that allowed Tashara to preserve her fertility and begin having normal periods again.
Fertility surgery success story #3: Tristi
Surgical removal of fibroids followed by IVF leads to pregnancy
With two ectopic pregnancies in her 20s and now painful menstrual cycles due to fibroids at age 40, Tristi thought, “I’ll never be a mother.” But she was determined to try using IVF and consulted Dr. Anthony Propst at Texas Fertility Center. Although her OBGYN said the fibroids would not impact her fertility, Dr. Propst knew otherwise and performed the laparoscopic surgery Tristi needed. Just a few days after her second IVF cycle, she found out she was going to be a mother.
