Minimally Invasive Fibroid Removal

Our Texas fibroid specialists perform minimally invasive fibroid removal for a quicker recovery

Many women suffer from pain and discomfort caused by fibroids. Heavy periods, pelvic pain, constipation and/or trouble emptying your bladder can negatively affect your quality of life. For decades, the most common type of fibroid surgery was hysterectomy, which sadly ended many women’s hopes of having children. Today, our Texas fibroid specialists can perform minimally invasive fibroid removal surgery in most cases, protecting women’s ability to have children while getting them back to their everyday activities more quickly.

Our experienced surgeons always try to resolve fertility issues using the least invasive approach. For most women experiencing the pain and frustration that comes with uterine fibroids, laparoscopic surgery, with or without use of the DaVinci robot, is the most effective way to resolve the problem with the least risk and fastest recovery.

What is a uterine fibroid?

A uterine fibroid is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor that grows in the wall of the uterus. While fibroids are not cancerous, they can cause uncomfortable symptoms, including pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. They can also make it difficult to get pregnant, making them a common cause of infertility. As many as 80% of women develop fibroids by age 50, though some are unaware they have them if they don’t cause any symptoms.

Minimally invasive fibroid removal surgery

For very large fibroids, a major surgery similar to a c-section, called a laparotomy, may be necessary. But for more common cases with smaller fibroids, our advanced tools and techniques make fibroid removal much simpler.

Our Texas fibroid specialists can often perform a minimally invasive fibroid removal procedure called a laparoscopic myomectomy, which allows women to return home the same day of surgery and recover more quickly.

During this outpatient surgery, your surgeon will pass a lighted surgical telescope through a tiny incision in your belly button, which allows them to see inside the abdominal cavity. Using small surgical instruments passed through one or two other small incisions in the lower abdomen, fibroids can be successfully removed, without the need to make a large incision.

This fibroid surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Because this is a minimally invasive fibroid removal procedure, women can expect minimal scarring, less pain and a quick recovery in just a few days.
