We define endometriosis as displaced endometrial Cells

Austin Fertility Surgeon and Endometriosis Treatment Expert, Dr. Kaylen Silverberg
Endometriosis Expert, Kaylen Silverberg, MD

The functional female reproductive system prepares the uterus to nurture a developing pregnancy by augmenting the uterine lining (endometrium) each month. The hormones estrogen and progesterone help to build this protective mucus membrane. If pregnancy does not occur, the body sheds endometrial tissue, rich in blood vessels, in a menstrual cycle. Endometriosis occurs when the body fails to flush this excess, and instead stores it as “implants” found in and outside the pelvic cavity.

Endometrial cells respond to estrogen no matter where they are found.

When displaced, the clumps of tissue have no exit route and become problematic. Internal bleeding caused by endometriosis leads to pain, scar tissue, ovarian cysts and fluid-filled sacs in the affected areas.

In some cases, endometriosis causes infertility. Up to 50 percent of women experiencing infertility will have the underlying condition of endometriosis, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

Your reproductive surgeon will outline what’s involved with minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. The Texas Fertility Center gynecologic surgeons favor laser therapy to remove endometrial implants and scar tissue. A skilled surgeon performs this minimally invasive technique with the goal of protecting future fertility.

Read more here about the stages of endometriosis, and types of implants that cause infertility. We are most concerned with adhesions and scar tissue that may interfere with normal ovulation, Fallopian tube access and embryo implantation.

Endometriosis is a perplexing syndrome, with no clear-cut treatment or answer as to why some women develop the disease. Women with endometrial tissue that grows outside of the uterus may need recurring treatment over their reproductive years from an endometriosis doctor in Austin.

The treatment of endometriosis depends on the patient’s symptoms. Dr. Lisa Hansard discusses using laparoscopy to diagnose and treat the endometriosis.
