Ovarian Cyst Treatment

Find world-class ovarian cyst treatment

Our Austin fertility surgeons know that ovarian cysts can cause pain, discomfort and sometimes infertility. Regardless of the cause, it is wise to seek ovarian cyst treatment, in the form of medication or minimally invasive surgery, in order to overcome the symptoms.

What are ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that appear in the ovary or on its surface. Many women will have ovarian cysts at some point. The majority of cysts cause little to no discomfort, and resolve without treatment from our Austin fertility surgeons. These are known as follicular cysts, which occur when a normal monthly follicle (egg-containing sac) continues to grow.

However, some women may experience ovarian cysts that cause problems, such as pain in the lower abdomen and bloating. If ovarian cysts are caused by endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a woman may also experience fertility problems.

A look at ovarian cyst treatment

Our surgeons must diagnose a woman before ovarian cyst treatment can begin. Our Austin fertility surgeons can initially identify an ovarian cyst during a pelvic exam.

They may also perform a pelvic ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis and identify the location of the cyst. In other cases, our surgeons may perform a minimally invasive procedure known as laparoscopy. This procedure involves inserting a thin, lighted instrument through a tiny incision in the abdomen to visualize the ovaries and remove the ovarian cyst. The treatment for ovarian cysts varies depending on the type of cyst.

  • Follicular cysts often clear up on their own, but there is some evidence that birth control pills can resolve them faster. Occasionally, follicular cysts may require surgical removal or drainage, if other methods fail.
  • Other types of ovarian cysts typically must be removed through laparoscopic surgery. Our Austin fertility surgeons are highly trained in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including da Vinci® robotic surgery.

What happens after ovarian cyst treatment?

Once an ovarian cyst resolves spontaneously or is treated by one of our Austin fertility surgeons, a woman’s odds of conceiving, with or without help from fertility treatment, increase greatly.
